Millennial THEM Anime Awards Runners-Up: The (Next-To-) Worst of Anime

It's not always best to win at everything. These titles almost won the award of the worst of the worst. But they either were just good enough to avoid being truly bad ... or not enough THEM members were exposed to their true horror. I wouldn't be proud to be listed here.

Tied for 23rd Place: six titles: Ys (TV), The Wings of Honneamise (also listed in the Best Movies runners-up), Revolutionary Girl Utena Adolescence Apocalypse (Movie), La Blue Girl (OAV, hentai), Ariel Visual (OAV), andAdventures of Kotetsu (OAV). So much competition to be number 23!

22nd Place: Golgo 13: The Professional (Movie). I hope that real-life assassins, if always surrounded by sexpots always willing to share their beds, would have more fun with themselves than this dour psycho. Duke Togo has all the charisma of a rusted cartridge, and even less realism than the silly CG choppers that try (and fail) to off him. Stupid, insulting, and offensive.

21st Place: Twilight Q2 (Movie). Double-featured with Angel's Egg on the fansub lists, this plodding feature has very little to distinguish itself. Perhaps because no THEM member has successfully stayed awake long enough to give a coherent review of it. Until they make legal stimulants powerful enough to combat this narcoleptic nonsense, we'll have to take their word for it.

Tied for 18th Place: Toward the Terra (Movie). A four-hour long anime movie? Four hours too long for many viewers, who found this feature boring and unworthy of attention. Though some insist this anime is a classic, few THEMers are willing to invest the time to prove the naysayers wrong.

Tied for 18th Place: The Cockpit (Movie). While rated five stars in THEM's review, it did not rate at all as a favorite title, while several disaffected members cited heavy-handed anti-war (and anti-US) sentiment as well as overloads of angst in labeling this as a bomb. Perhaps the message of this Matsumoto Leiji-inspired feature isn't universal enough for such a high rating.

Tied for 18th Place: Tale of Genji (Movie). Few will argue that this adaptation of Murasaki Shikibu's seminal novel (the first ever written) is badly paced, vaguely acted, and intensely boring. Even fewer will argue that it belongs on this list.

17th Place: Kizuna (OAV). This so-called shounen ai title has no romance, no plot, and no characterization. Repetitious music and half-hearted animation complete this utter waste of time.

Tied for 15th Place: Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (OAV). Gee whiz, a bad video game OAV series by Ohbari Masami. Who'd a'thunk it. With its overemphasized breasts and bulging muscles, Gowcaizer fails to remember that characterization doesn't consist of a list of battle moves and body measurements. And the action isn't even that good either!

Tied for 15th Place: Battle Arena Toshinden (OAV). Surprise surprise. The second bad video game OAV (single-shot this time) by Ohbari Masami, this older sibling has badly choreographed fighting scenes, and a wholly unlikable character in Ellis. (Get a gag, NOW!) Not that the rest of the characters are any better, but at least their voices are tolerable.

14th Place: Jungle de Ikou! (OAV). Nicknamed "Jungle de Icky" by less-than-impressed THEM members, this tawdry "fantasy" deals with 10-year-old girls who magically sprout F-size boobs after performing "tribal dances". Has evoked these lines from THEM audiences: "I hope that's a codpiece" and "EWWEWWEWWEWW *twitch*." Offensive, exploitative stuff that only sullies the name of anime here in the States.

13th Place: LILY Cat (Movie). A lame version of the Alien plot (why is everyone dying on our spaceship- AIEEEE!), this sci-fi feature fails on so many levels, not even MSTing can salvage the experience.

12th Place: The Girl from Phantasia (OAV). Vacuous, stupid, and mindless, and that's just the lead female character. This wannabe fantasy is an obviously failed pilot, and it deserves to stay in the black hole of obscurity that it's lodged itself in. Unredeeming, shallow dreck.

11th Place: Cool Devices (OAV, hentai). In all actuality, this is probably THE worst title of the lot. Any title that resorts to rape and murder (of *ahem* 19-year-old girls - who the HECK are you kidding?) to get a sexual rise out of its audience DESERVES to get fragged. It should be noted that some segments are tamer (if no less mindless and stupid) than others. Many THEMers have actively avoided this title, and rightfully so - it's just not worth seeing at all.
