Links to Other Review Sites

Yeah, we know, these pages are technically our competition, but in this society, a marketplace of ideas almost always ends up being beneficial to the consumer. While Zeo's Reviews, the site that inspired our own here at T.H.E.M., is no longer online, here are some fellow review sites with ideas we found especially well-presented and informative:

Takaya Noriko says, 'Check out these sites!'

The Animé Café. Our unofficial sister site, chock-full of well-written reviews, an encyclopedia of anime titles and terms, trivia questions, and many other features. Their exhaustive episode-by-episode reviews make sure no detail is overlooked. © 1997-2001 Akio and Jane Nagatomi.

Also hosted here is the A Parent's Guide to Anime, which is a good barometer for appropriateness, and has increasingly gotten solid submissions in the reviews department. © Bryan Pfaffenberger, Akio Nagatomi, Jane Nagatomi.

The Anime Critic The maintainer of this site, Pete Harcoff, has been hard at work in keeping his site at the top of the game in the anime reviews scene. Well-written and never afraid to pull any punches, this top-notch site has the mark of a well-traveled movie-hound who has a lot to say about the anime medium. NOTE: Currently on hiatus. © 1999-2001 Peter Harcoff

Akemi's Anime World. With a huge number of reviews , a discussion board, and even a how-to-draw anime page, this site has a lot to recommend itself for the anime viewer. The review site is actually just part of an ambitious anime-related network of sites, all run by one very busy (and talented) webmaster. (Akemi, incidentally, is his real-life Japanese wife.) © 1999-2001 Marc Marshall (Makosuke)

CURRENTLY DOWNAnime For Kids A fairly new site featuring reviews of family-friendly anime. It's very refreshing to see a parent take the time to write well-done reviews on anime, assess whether they're good for her children, and share this information with everyone else. Though just begun, it's already a good complement to the Parent's Guide. We encourage parents to visit this site, and we wish this site lots of luck. © 2000 Planet Williams

Anime on DVD. Many people have asked us for information on this important new medium of home viewing. Now that we have a DVD player ourselves, we turn to this site, which offers plenty of information on the quality of DVDs released, particularly in North America, and offers the latest news on release dates and acquisitions from the distributors themselves. © 1998-2001 Chris Beveridge

Anime and Manga Meta-Review. Featuring short capsule reviews of a huge assortment of series (over 480 titles at last count), this is a very competent site that also comments on what other reviewers (including THEM) have said about the titles in question. Formerly on one HUGE page, it's been reformatted to be browser-friendly, though the web staff is still working out a few kinks in the HTML. Notice there might be slight differences in title names, as this site is based in Australia, but don't let that deter you from visiting. © 2000-2001 Andrew Shelton

Anime Ai. Though recently moved from a different server and incomplete, Jay Dee Archer's site has plenty of short reviews, as well as fanfic and other features as well. Hopefully the site will be back up to full speed soon! © 2001 Jay Dee Archer

The Anime Review. This review site features titles categorized by genre and alphabetically, and is generally quite solidly written. Though the site relies on frames (which may not jive well with older browsers), it's quite simple to navigate, which is a boon for anyone surfing for reviews, especially considering some of the rarities discussed here, including Everyday Is Sunday, Blazing Transfer Student, and Dream Hunter REM. © 1997-2001 Jason Huff

The Anime Quik Guide A self-described "attempt to provide an overview of anime titles that could be consulted and browsed within a single web page." As such, it isn't overly detailed, but it's good for those of you who want opinions on a few titles relatively quickly. © 1999-2001 Jeff Towery

BCASR Web Site: Anime Review Page. Two "normal" guys, Don and Tony, discuss various anime titles in grand Siskel & Ebert style. Even though the page commits the same "put everything in one humongous page" sin as the Meta-Review site, it's fun reading, and the reviews are well-written, too. Unfortunately, it seems they haven't updated in a very long time. Either that, or we just have a very old link. © 1997-2001 Don Featherstun and Tony Palladini

CURRENTLY DOWNBobmink Anime. Reviews and miscellany from a pair of Americans who go by the names Bob and Mink. Lots of titles reviewed, though the reviews tend to be on the short side. Good variety, though, and worth visiting for opinions on rarer series. © 2001 Bob and Mink

CURRENTLY DOWNEmiko's Genesis Reviews! is currently down, and this link is waiting to be updated. This site is marked by intelligently written reviews with a humorous touch: lots and lots of great-looking original art of the maintainer's own anime characters (and even several volumes of his own manga series!). © 1996-2001 Ian Kim.

Julie's Anime Reviews. Specializing in titles featured at the showings of the Tucson Animation Screen Society (located at University of Arizona, our friendly southern rival), this site is *loaded* with solid reviews of newer anime. Fair warning, however, as the reviews do tend to be tinged with the reviewer's conservative leanings. One of these days, I'll have to catch a TASS showing myself ^_^ Until then, Julie's is the place to catch up on the newest titles. © 1997-2001 Julie Bihn

Lord Carnage's Reviews. Though the reviews themselves can sometimes be on the short side, the people here have put together quite a number of reviews of various series, many of which are on the obscure side. Very amusing rating system, too. Warning: might load a bit slow at modem speeds. © 1998-2001 Lord Carnage, Herself the Elf

CURRENTLY DOWNSara's Anime Reviews. A comparatively small site that features a few anime that most of the other sites really don't cover. I'd like to see this site get larger, personally. © 1999-2001 Sara Faith Wright

And of course, if you're looking for even more information on anime, check out the list of review sites at the Anime Web Turnpike. There's more second opinions here than a medical professional convention. Enjoy!

Have we missed anything? Or, more correctly, would you like to see your site listed here? Give us an e-mail at themreviews@themanime.org. Mind you, we won't just link to any schmoe with an Akira write-up. And sites loaded with Flash animations, Java scripts, and extraneous imagery won't cut it. But if you're handy with a keyboard or a pad and pencil, and you'd like us to take a gander at your site (or show us up for the amateurs we are!), please let us know.
